"Statistics without information."

Abstract:

Assessing reliability, readiness, and logistics in the absence of plentiful information is a key challenge for systems and system-of-systems modeling. Although data may not always be scarce, frequently good information is. In order to best evaluate decision tradeoffs early in a design process, incomplete and even non-existent information simply cannot be a barrier to useful analysis. This is particularly true for future systems and/or systems in the design or prototype phases, where complete information is, by definition, lacking.

Three types of scenarios are analyzed and discussed. These represent various stages in project and data system maturity:

  • Future systems with almost no traditional data
  • Existing systems with lots of data, but sometimes minimal information
  • Prototype systems with available, but limited, data

"Nonparametric Estimation of First Passage Time Distributions in Flowgraph Models"

Statistical flowgraphs represent multistate semi-Markov processes using integral transforms (e.g., Laplace transforms) of transition time distributions between adjacent states, which are combined algebraically and inverted to estimate first passage time distributions between nonadjacent states. Previous flowgraph work has been based on parametric distribution families; in this talk we present an estimation method for flowgraphs using empirical transforms based on sample data, with no assumption of specific parametric probability models. Theoretical and computational issues are discussed, and the method is illustrated with an application to reliability data.

[edit] Laura Swiler

from Sandia can give a talk on "model calibration under uncertainty" (matching moments or percentiles from experimental data to corresponding statistics from simulation runs).

Oct. 20-23 will not work. Otherwise, she can probably make any other date

Any Friday in Oct will work

[edit] Ron Wasserstein

--Erik

(currently ASA executive director)

(Aparna) I ran into Ron Wasserstein at the JSM (currently executive director at ASA) and he said that he would be willing to do a chapter visit to our chapter. He likes NM a lot. His expenses are paid by ASA so he won't cost us anything. If you guys want him as a speaker at our chapter meeting, pop him an email.
